As the In a Spin Crochet Along starts this Friday, each and every Friday’s blog post for the foreseeable future will be devoted to a new crochet pattern.

Its going to take up a fair bit of my time, but I will still be having a non-crochet blog post every now and then.  It wont be weekly, but it will be on a Wednesday from now on when it happens.

As well as all that, the big news is that a new Spincushions website is in the works.  I am very excited about it – its going to be so lovely!  I just wanted you to be aware that sometime in the future, you will visit and it will all look very different – it will still be me, just a more attractive version of me and my ramblings.

This week has seen me reach some great milestones with my pincushions and to celebrate, I am giving away a pincushion! Details on how to be in with a chance later.

First though, I want to share with you my plans for the weekend.Tomorrow I am packing up my pincushions and heading over to the lovely coastal town of Port Fairy to take part in the Port Fairy MADE Artists Market.  Its a unique market where you will find some truly one of a kind wares, held 4 times a year.

I thought today I would share with you some of my fellow stallholders and their works.

First up is the super cute Pint.

The last I’ll share today is the work of Foxowlroad.  Oriel makes a variety of beautiful things.  Her felt stitchery is among my favourites though.

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow!  I’ll take some pics and share with you the action next week.

Now, on to the giveaway!

All you need to do to be in with a chance to win, is sign up to follow this very blog.  Its open to everyone in the world too!  There’s a lil box up the top right to add your email address too.  I promise I wont spam you – you will only get an email when I post something new.  Of course, you are free to unsubscribe at any time.  I’d love you to stay, but if I am annoying you, then by all means hit that unsubscribe link in the emails.  If you are already signed up, then thank you and you are already in the draw!  I will be drawing the winner just before I post next Friday morning – Australia time.

Good luck!

I’ve added a new page today to make it easy to find where to buy my pincushions.  It just up the top there, next to the Pincushions page.

More recently, I have made the change to made to order for some of my designs.  There will always be one off, ready to go pincushions available, but some will now be made as orders are made.  This will only add a day or two to the order.

To whet your appetite, here is my newest made to order design – the rainbow.  Rainbows are so eye-catching and bright, and a natural occurance.  What better way to decorate than with all the colours of the rainbow?  I stitch this free hand, no patterns or lines, just me, a bunch of bright coloured embroidery thread & a needle.  Happy-making 🙂

Embroidered Rainbow Pincushion

I love how the human brain works.  I was reading somewhere about how personalised gifts just keep getting bigger & bigger.  You can pretty much get anything you could imagine with your initial emblazoned on it.  So, of course I thought of pincushions with initials. Nothing new there.  Lots of folks make them.  This is my take on them.   I hand cut each of the initials 🙂

This was my first basic style, simple but effective I think with the colour combos.

Then, I had thoughts to add a little more, and so the next style was born

Of course, my head kept going

But that’s not where it ends, oh no.  I am now working on a completely embroidered design.  I am sure that wont be the end of it either 🙂

Does your brain keep expanding from one idea too?

You know, its hard to listen to yourself sometimes.  Sometimes, even though I have misgivings, I do something that has been suggested by someone else or I am influenced by others into doing something that is not a direction I would normally go.

One such adventure was my foray into the world of kits.  So many people told me I should make my pincushions as kits so others could make them.

Don’t get me wrong, I am proud of them to a certain extent.  I worked for many hours on each one.  I made sure the patterns all worked.  I had them tested by others.  I wrote & re-wrote the instructions many times over.  I took photo after photo and edited soooo many pics.  I spent countless hours on them really.  Sure, I got excited about the newness of the idea & what I could do with it, but here’s the kicker – I never really ENJOYED one moment of the process.

I forgot that I make pincushions.  Its what I do and I love it.  The preparation is not the fun bit for me.  The fun bit is making each one with love and care.  The fun bit is using my hands to create something fun, colourful and hopefully wonderful for those who get one – whether that is via a gift or purchase.

So I have thought long and hard and I have decided not to make kits anymore.  I have a few in stock that I are available at a reduced price in my Etsy storeMadeit store and Facebook store, but once they are gone, that’s it – no more kits.

This means I can concentrate more on what I love to do – make pincushions!  Back to my happy place again.

Have you been influenced like me into doing something that didn’t fit who you are & what you do?

P.S. – only 1 red penguin kit left – either via my facebook store by clicking the pic above or here in my etsy store

Today, I thought you may like to see what goes on to make my pincushions.

Every now & then, I sit down to my big kitchen table with my pile of felt and go nuts preparing pincushions for sewing.

felt pile

I have my popular designs that I make reglarly, but I also always have ideas kicking around I need to try too.  Today was a day for both types of preparation.  I am out of peacocks (my biggest seller), I have a creative challenge to meet for an etsy team I belong to, and I want to upsize a couple of mini pincushions I’ve made recently.  This is the extent of my written plans for this session.  Not much eh? LOL  A slack prep day today!

And so on to cutting!

I cut my felt a few different ways.  I do die cut a couple of things – like my big circles, and use the rotary cutter for the sides, but most other things are cut with good old scissors freehand, making it up as I go.

If a design turns out to be popular, I will sometimes make a pattern to make it a little less fiddly and time consuming when it comes to preparation.

Once all the cutting is done, its on to embroidery thread selection and then the prep is all done.  8 pincushions ready to be made!

Now its on to the fun part – the sewing!  I’ll show you once they are all done. 🙂

Shameless self promotion today.  I am a bit tired of looking at some of my older stock, so I am having a little sale over the next couple of days via my Facebook Page.

The sale will kick off at 8pm tonight my time – Australian Eastern Standard Summer Time.  All you have to do is check out the photo album called Sale Time – 16th – 18th March 2012.  I’ll have all the details there by 8pm on how to purchase your pick 🙂

Here’s a peak of some that will be available.

Hope you can spare a minute over the weekend to have a peak 🙂 Thanks folks 🙂
