Here’s how a few of you went with last week’s block. Excellent!

This week we are making a new size!  Yes we are – surprise!  It will be a 20 cm (8″) block – well actually it will be 2 blocks.  Just like the first week, before you start the new pattern below, I need you to make up a square following the pattern from Week 1, but make it to 20cm (8″) before you do your border round.  Just like last time, count up the number of stitches you end up with along the edge and keep a note.   This block shall be known as “Block 5”.  This is the last time I will ask you to do this.  No more surprises 🙂

And so on to this week’s new block.  The designer is Beverly Button. Beverley’s website, Beverly Button Crochet Designs is worth a visit for some crochety browsing 🙂

I have translated her pattern into UK terms below with permission.  Sharon of Knits N’ Everything Fibre has converted the pattern into the chart below also with Beverley’s permission. Please read the “Notes” before you start

Notes

PC

I had to look up “PC” – I now know it means PopCorn stitch.   I thought it was the same as a bobble, but no!  This explanation of it comes from here.

“Work one chain and 5 treble/double crochet in the same stitch. Take the final loop of the last stitch worked from the hook and insert the hook into the one chain before the group of stitches, then into the dropped loop and draw the yarn through.”

This video shows you how its done

Worsted Weight Yarn & Border

As some of us have found in previous blocks, because this pattern was made using worsted weight yarn, you may have to add a row or two to get it to size before you do the border round of dc (sc) as usual.

After the kick off Notes

The amended pattern notes included above were written by Nikki of the Krista Facebook Group.

This is the way the designer of this week’s block does PC stitch – slight variation to the above instructions :

Popcorn stitch (PC): 5 dc in same sp or st, remove hook from loop; from front, insert hook through both loops of first dc, pull dropped loop through. 1 PC completed.

Once you’re done, don’t forget to share your blocks on instagram tagging  #inaspincal, the In a Spin CAL flickr group or the Krista Crochet Group on Facebook because I’ll be sharing some of your work here next week 🙂

No surprises next week.  Just another new block pattern to play with.

OK I’m already confused. The chart doesn’t seem to match the worded pattern on round 2. Should it be Ch 3, * (2tr, ch2, 2tr) in next st, tr in next st, 5-tr PC in next st, tr in next st; repeat from * around?

Oh no, I figured it out. Just so you know, the chart for row 2 is showing 2tr ch2 2tr instead of 1tr ch2 1tr.

I haven’t tried it yet Mel, but Nikki in the facebook group has re-written a part of the pattern – I’ll update the post with her notes when I have a minute – madly doing market prep now. Sorry!

Oops! for round 2, but have found its is sitting ok with this. The pattern had to be adjusted for charting and the rows/stitches indicated gave me 8 inches with Aussie 8 ply and a 5mm hook. Every chart will have some little personal touch, so that it is harder for someone else to claim it as their own. Last chart had a stray slip stitch.
